How to Prepare for Your Business Trip to Saudi Arabia

    PhilipBy PhilipSeptember 16, 2024

Business trips to Saudi Arabia require some additional preparation and cultural awareness compared to other destinations. With a unique culture, business environment, and climate, being strategic when planning your visit will help ensure it is smooth, safe, and successful. Follow these tips for preparing for your upcoming business trip to Saudi Arabia.

    Planning Your Itinerary

When planning your business trip to Saudi Arabia, research your schedule and make sure to account for prayer times, as many businesses will close for prayers several times a day. Be aware that the workweek is Sunday to Thursday in Saudi Arabia. Schedule meetings during normal business hours, which are typically 9am to 1pm and 4.30pm to 8pm. Avoid scheduling meetings on Fridays and Saturdays, as many businesses are closed.

Research the locations you will be visiting and how long it takes to travel between them. Saudi cities are very spread out, so make sure to account for travel time. The country is very hot, so plan indoor meetings and activities during the afternoon when it’s very hot outside.

Applying for a Business Visa in Saudi

There are a few different business visa options for short-term trips to Saudi Arabia:

    • A single entry visa valid for 90 days
    • A multiple entry visa valid for 180 days, which allows stays of up to 30 days per visit
    • A multiple entry visa valid for 365 days (or 730 days for some nationalities), permitting stays of up to 90 days per visit
    • A multiple entry visa valid for 1825 days (5 years), with stays of up to 180 days per visit. This is only available for US and UK citizens.

You can apply online for a business visa in Saudi Arabia – AEI Saudi or through the Saudi consulate. Processing takes 5-7 business days and requires a letter of invitation from your Saudi sponsor. Start 1-2 months in advance, as delays can happen. Some nationalities need extra time for security clearance.

Work with your Saudi hosts, provide your passport details early, and carry digital and hard copies of your approved business visa KSA when traveling.

    Respecting Cultural Norms

Saudi Arabia is a conservative Islamic country, so be sure to dress modestly and avoid tight, revealing, or transparent clothing. Women should cover their legs, arms, and hair. Men should avoid shorts and sleeveless shirts. Knowing some Arabic phrases and greetings is appreciated, but many Saudis in business speak English.

There are strict laws around alcohol, drugs, pornography, and relationships. Be aware of local laws and avoid carrying or consuming anything illegal. Displaying public affection, even among married couples, is frowned upon.

Saudi business culture tends to be formal and hierarchical. Use formal titles and show elders respect. Have plenty of business cards on hand and present them with two hands. Be prepared for meetings to start late.

    Staying Healthy and Safe

Check travel advisories and enrol in your embassy’s STEP program. Avoid protests and areas with high crime. Use licensed taxis instead of ride shares. Keep a low profile.

The heat and sun can be intense, especially if you are coming from a cooler climate. Stay hydrated, use sunscreen, opt for indoor activities during the afternoon, and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces.

Stick to bottled water and avoid raw fruits and vegetables to prevent traveller’s diarrhoea. Only eat well-cooked meat and fish. Keep some oral rehydration packets on hand. Get any recommended vaccinations.

Following these tips will help you have a safe, respectful, and productive business trip to Saudi Arabia. Do your research ahead of time, respect local customs, stay healthy, and work with your hosts to build strong business relationships.
